A final application was submitted for design review of a proposed project at 2138 Kittredge Street in Berkeley. The eight-story residential proposal, brought by The Austin Group, was first reported on by SF YIMBY in August of 2024, and a previous design review meeting was held in August of 2025. Since then, developers have remained consistent in their exterior designs, with only minor modifications made to the interior layout. The final design review application will approve these changes.

According to public records, the final designs will include an enclosed interior space of approximately 43,000 square feet. The space will be divided into building systems, circulation spaces, and 66 new residential units. Five of the units are to be reserved for very low-income residents.

Niles Bolton Associates is responsible for the design. Previously shared illustrations show the structure clad with an articulated facade, narrow floor-to-ceiling windows in white and sandstone hues. Darker materials will contrast with the pale exterior around the base level.

Construction of the new building will require the demolition of an existing three-unit residential building on the site. Initial concerns were raised about the historic significance of the buildings to be demolished. The current property street view looks at the 1935 Georgian Colonial brick addition, while the rear of the lot is occupied by the 1903-04-built John C. Fitzpatrick house. Efforts to give the building historic significance failed, and the project will move forward despite previous opposition.

The property is located between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue, half a block from the southwest corner of the UC Berkeley campus and two blocks from the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The building’s close proximity to the businesses and transportation options of Downtown Berkeley makes its location highly walkable. Furthermore, it’s walking distance from UC Berkeley’s campus may appeal to students or staff at the university.
