A new residential project offering affordable housing options to city’s teaches has been approved for development at 1715 Foothill Boulevard, San Antonio, Oakland. The project proposal includes the development of a new five-story residential infill offering deed-restricted housing.
Austin Sandy Architects is responsible for the design, collaborating with Factory OS, a modular housing manufacturer.

The project site is a parcel spanning an area of 0.24 acres. The scope work will bring new deed-restricted housing that will be affordable for teachers within the Oakland Unified School District. The five-story will offer 29 residential units as 100% affordable housing. The proposed 61-foot-tall structure will yield around 28,250 square feet. Unit types will include 20 one-bedrooms and nine two-bedrooms. The ground level will include a lobby and cafe. A rooftop deck will be included for residents facing the public park.
Illustrations show the five-story infill will be clad with white stucco, brick veneer, and cement panels.

New pre-application permits were filed in March 2024 and received ministerial approval by virtue of being in an S-13 Zone.
The site is located along Foothill Boulevard, facing San Antonio Park between 17th Avenue and 18th Avenue. The property is close to I-880 and a 10-minute bicycle ride from the Brooklyn Basin waterfront park. The site is also well positioned by several schools, as per the developer’s vision. Roosevelt Middle School is just a few block away on the opposite side of San Antonio Park. Garfield Elementary School is four blocks south along Foothill Boulevard, and Franklin Elementary School is roughly seven blocks to the north.

Love me some teaches
Teachers don’t want “affordable” 1 & 2 bedroom apartments. They want to be paid properly so that they can rent or buy housing like other middle class families.
It’s a nice project for affordable housing designated for teachers so maybe layoff the complaining? Yes, teachers should be paid more but this can allow some to save more as it now.

Would love to know more details about how this became dedicated housing for teachers. The docs in Accela are not illuminating and actually only say “teachers” in one random place on one drawing. How did OUSD and the developer come to terms?
