Construction Tops Out at 965 Weeks Street In East Palo AltoA new three-story building has been proposed for use as the African American Holistic Resource Center (AAHRC) on a project site located at 1890 Alcatraz Avenue in Berkeley. The project proposal includes the development of a three-story facility to host services that benefit the African American community with education, employment, health, mental health, and housing advocacy and support.
The City of Berkeley is the property owner. The design team includes the AAHRC Steering Committee, City Staff, and AE3 Partners, Inc.
The proposed scope of work includes the demolition of the existing building to allow for the construction of the future African American Holistic Resource Center (AAHRC). The resource center building will rise to a height of three stories and span an area of 6,000 square feet. On-site parking will be developed on the ground floor.
The funding for the project comes from the following sources:
- $7.0M: Measure T1, Phase 2 Allocation Approved by City Council
- $6.85M: General Fund Allocated on 6/13/2023
- $1.0M: Federal Earmark/HUD Grant
- $250K: General Fund allocated in 2020
The original project planned to renovate the existing City building at 1890 Alcatraz. After the structural and soils assessment, the City proceeded to provide an additional $6.85M in funding to support the new plan.
The design process is currently underway. The estimated construction timeline has not been revealed yet.
