Sutter Health has filed permits for a planned medical campus located at 2831-2841 Mission College Boulevard in Santa Clara. The proposed project would include the construction of both a new 302-bed hospital and off-site parking garage. The combined investment will reach approximately 2.8 billion dollars, making it the largest singular capital investment in the organization’s history.
The planned eight-story hospital would be approximately 850,000 square feet, housing everything from an emergency department, intensive care units, labor and delivery services with a Level III neonatal ICU, operating rooms, advanced imaging, and a rooftop helipad. Meanwhile, an additional 140,000 square feet of courtyard and 287,000 square of landscaping are included in the site proposal.

The existing site is currently occupied by an office park and surface parking. The office buildings would be fully demolished to make way for the new project. Some surface parking may be preserved, but most will be replaced by newly planned parking facilities. The main hospital site will include 221 parking spaces, and the supporting garage is expected to provide 1,390 spaces to meet the hospital and medical facilities’ demands.
This is not the first expansion Sutter Health has made into the Santa Clara area. In 2024, Sutter and The Sobrato Organization announced plans for four buildings spread across nearby sites. Most recently, the Sutter East Santa Clara Care Center opened this past October at 2441 Mission College Boulevard, less than a mile from the newly proposed hospital. Sutter Health has also released statements emphasizing their longtime partnership with the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group, clearly marking their intention to build a comprehensive network across the South Bay.
This hospital proposal would add approximately 3,000 clinical and staff positions to the area, supporting the larger Sutter Health presence. The network also plans to bring new residency and fellowship programs in Santa Clara beginning in 2027, including internal medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, and radiology. If unimpeded, the medical center is currently projected to open in late 2031.
