Last week the new development project at 1027-1035 El Camino Real in Sunnyvale held a groundbreaking ceremony, with construction beginning soon after. Developer PMB partnered with El Camino Health in the proposal of the new mixed used development, including a 4-story convalescent hospital and an adjacent 6-story senior housing facility. Designs were provided by Material Design Architects and WATG architecture firms.

In addition to representatives from El Camino Health, PMB, and the two architecture firms, the event also drew notable speakers and attendees such as Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Kline and several health board members. The turnout is indicative of the development’s scale, with proposed usages that will address multiple crucial needs for the city, including increased housing, convalescent care, physical therapy facilities, and additional health services.
The new development is part of the larger El Camino Area Plan to redevelop the commercial corridor along El Camino. The mixed-use designation of the project is in line with the plan’s goal of creating a higher density of housing and services along the transit-heavy region of the city.

This most recent expansion of El Camino Health will add to the facilities they currently operate in Los Gatos, Cupertino, Mountain View, and San Jose. The range of services provided by the other nearby centers will help to support the needs of residents and patients in both the senior housing and the convalescent hospital.
