New documents show plans for the proposed project at 501 South Almaden Avenue in San Jose. The plans indicate a significant scale-up from earlier proposals, raising the total number of units from 53 to 99. The project’s developer, Satellite Affordable Housing Associates, will be using Senate Bill 35 as a means of expediting the higher-density project.
The project is expected to be 100% affordable, bringing a significant boost in income accessible units to San Jose. The unit types are to focus on single occupancies, with 67 studio apartments and 31 single-bedroom apartments. There is also to be a single two-bedroom manager’s unit included on site.
The building’s designs are being led by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects. Early renderings show a variegated façade, with several different color accents mixed across a grey and white base. The upper eight stories of the building will be dedicated to housing, while the ground floor will include parking, a lobby, and additional building spaces.

The site is located in San Jose’s downtown neighborhood, just one block away from the San Jose Convention Center. Its position is well connected to multiple forms of transportation, including the nearby 280 and 87 freeways, as well as the VTA light rail and bus lines. Along the edge of the downtown area, it will have easy walking access to many of the shops and restaurants in the city center to the north, but with more of a neighborhood atmosphere to the south.
