Plans for affordable housing have been approved for 1171 Sonora Court in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County. The entitlement will allow construction of 172 units of low-income housing across from the Lawrence Caltrain Station and near the city’s border with Santa Clara. MidPen Housing is the project developer.

The 86-foot-tall structure is expected to yield around 201,700 square feet, including around 112,400 square feet of housing. The project will include 170 affordable housing units and two managers’ units. Of the 172 units, there will be 27 studios, 57 one-bedrooms, 45 two-bedrooms, and 43 three-bedrooms. Affordability will vary somewhat, with 136 units for lower-income households and 34 for moderate-income households. Parking will be included for 88 cars and 122 bicycles.

Studio T Square is responsible for the design, working with Jett on the landscape architecture. The podium-style complex will feature a familiar application of exterior materials and facade articulation to visually break up the overall massing. The structure will be clad with a mix of cement board siding, stucco, and tiles.
The complex will be composed of a two-story concrete podium capped by five floors of wood-frame housing. The ground floor will be designed to promote walkability and street activation by emphasizing the lobby, offices, and ‘bike kitchen’ facing the pedestrian plaza. Existing evergreen trees will be maintained during construction.

The roughly 1.3-acre property is currently occupied by a single-story industrial commercial structure. The complex is across from the Ira D. Hall affordable housing complex, also built by MidPen Housing, at 1178 Sonora Court. Across the tracks is the mixed-density residential enclave built by Olympic Residential Group and the Toll Brothers.
