Zoning changes have been approved to support a new life sciences campus at 1333 2nd Street in West Berkeley. The project will be built on the former site of Pacific Steel Casting and will involve demolishing both the old foundry and the nearby former Berkeley Forge and Tool building.
The project site spans an area of 10 acres. The scope of work includes the demolition of the former Pacific Steel Casting plant that was shut down in 2018 and development of a hub for life sciences companies.
The site is currently only zoned for manufacturing. The approval of the zoning rules can allow for the groundwork for new projects. At this time, there are no specific developments proposed, the proposal will evaluate the potential in future developments for the 8.16-acre portion of the project area. Future projects are assumed to be consistent with the development standards of the proposed M-RD zoning district, and would consist of up to 900,000 square feet of R&D, office, laboratory, and light manufacturing uses and 1,900 automobile parking spaces. Height limits assigned for future buildings are between 55-105 feet.
