Preliminary plans have been filed for a warehouse-to-housing conversion at 2834 8th Street in West Berkeley, Alameda County. The project is looking to bring four units to existing commercial space across from the Berkeley Bowl West grocery store. Kava Massih Architects is responsible for the application.

The initial application describes plans to modify the existing warehouse into a three-story building, converting the commercial structure into four residential apartments. The modification will make adaptive reuse of the 1963-built warehouse formerly occupied by a badge manufacturer.

The roughly 0.15-acre property is located along 8th Street between Grayson Street and Heinz Avenue. Future residents will live across from the Berkeley Bowl West Grocery store and a few blocks from the bayside Aquatic Park.

The application invokes the city’s Middle Housing zoning rules to streamline approval of smaller multi-unit housing projects across the city. The property owners are listed as an Idaho-based couple. Public records show the property sold for $1.44 million last November.
