Preliminary permits have been filed for the potential subdivision of a single-family home lot at 1650 Fifth Street in West Berkeley, Alameda County. The application utilizes a 2024-enacted law to quadruple the housing capacity of an existing narrow parcel. Berkeley-based Wadlund + Design Studio is responsible for the design.
The pre-application seeks to utilize Senate Bill 684 to subdivide the current lot at 1650 5th Street into four separate lots. The existing single-family home will be renovated and retained. The remaining three lots will be developed with three detached single-family apartments. Further information about the project scale has yet to be established.
The property is located at the corner of 5th Street and Virginia Street, near some blocks of dense retail on 4th Street. Future residents would be two blocks away from James Kenney Park
The project application has yet to reply to a request for comment. Two individuals based at the address are listed as the property owners. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be shared.
