Earlier this week, the Summer Oaks Development at 175 West Verano Avenue in Sonoma marked a major milestone in the building’s construction. The project’s partners, including representatives from MidPen Housing, gathered to celebrate the initial framing of the affordable multi-unit building.

The development is half of a two-part plan for the 175 West Verano Avenue site, sharing the space with a future hotel. The affordable housing portion will include 72 new affordable units, ranging from one to three bedrooms. All units will be reserved for residents earning at or below 60% of the area median income. Furthermore, 52 of the units will be reserved for residents who work in agriculture.
Mithun is serving as the project architect for the affordable development. Building renderings show a grey and white wood-clad exterior. Multiple peaked roofs will break up the building’s upper profile, giving a townhome-esque aesthetic to the property.
The future residents will enjoy several communal spaces on site, including a large common room with a kitchen, a community courtyard, a learning center, and a play area for children. Additionally, residents will have access to a shared laundry room and mail room.
The location will also provide residents with nearby access to soccer and baseball fields, a large playground, picnic sites, and nature trails at Maxwell Farms Regional Park. For further transportation purposes, the building will include secure bike storage and vehicle parking on site.
According to MidPen, financing for the development was provided through both public and private sources, including the County of Sonoma, the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Joe Serna, Jr. Farmworker Housing Grant and Infill Infrastructure Grant programs, Bank of America, N.A., the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, and the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee.
The project is expected to be completed in the late fall of 2025. Information on how to apply can be found here.
