Permits have been filed for the construction of new housing located at 1700 Sacramento Street in Berkeley. The site is currently part of the North Berkeley BART station parking, at the north-east corner. If the project successfully moves forward, it will mark the first construction phase for the North Berkeley BART redevelopment plan.

The developer Insight Housing is responsible for the application. Their plans for the location include a new six-story apartment complex, with as many as 85 units. Building amenities will also make space for a ground-floor lobby, offices, bike storage, laundry room, and a community room.

SF YIMBY first reported on this project in September of this year, when modified plans were submitted for review. Those plans increased the apartment sizes without reducing the unit count, reworked the ground-level floor plan to allow additional resident services and property management offices, reduced bicycle parking from 64 to 52, and increased the utility room size.

In total, the structure will yield around 49,130 square feet, including 40,500 square feet for housing and 2,400 square feet for a private open plaza. Unit types will vary, with 55 studios and 30 one-bedrooms.

Pyatok Architects is responsible for the design, working with the landscape architecture firm PGAdesign. Facade materials will include metal shingles, exposed concrete walls, and stucco. Renderings show a current color scheme of white and gold exterior.

The 0.28-acre property is located at the corner of Sacramento Street and Virginia Street. Parking will be included for 52 bicycles, but with such fantastic access to public transportation, the developers are forgoing the option to provide extensive vehicle parking.

The application utilizes Assembly Bill 2011 to streamline the approval process for the project. With the expedited timeline, construction at 1700 Sacramento Street is expected to start as early as next year.
