Plans have surfaced for a potential residential expansion at 1201 Greenwich Street in Russian Hill, San Francisco. The filing suggests a three-story vertical addition above the garage section of the Tamalpais Apartments. San Francisco-based Syncopated Architecture is responsible for drafting the plans.
The plan set proposes adding eight apartments across 13,140 square feet above the existing garage, slightly reducing parking capacity from 26 to 25 spaces. The new housing would wrap around the historic Tamalpais Apartments without affecting the historic structure. Of the eight units, five will have three bedrooms, and three will have four bedrooms.

Conrad A. Meussdorffer designed the Tamalpais Apartments tower between 1922 and 1923. Meussdorffer was a prolific local architect, having studied under George Sanders and operated his own studio from 1897 through 1939. It is one of a handful of Classical Revival-style apartment towers by Meussdorffer across the city, alongside Empress Apartments at 1350 Sutter Street, the Arcona Apartments at 861 California, 2100 Jackson Street, and the Alta Plaza Apartments at 2500 Steiner Street. According to the city’s profile, “these and others by Meussdorffer are probably the finest collection of apartment buildings in San Francisco by one architect.”

The tower is located across from George Sterling Park and one block away from the Lombard Street switchbacks. The recent plans for 1201 Greenwich Street were published by the city’s planning department ahead of a project review meeting before an official application. The future development could invoke the city’s Housing Choice Program. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have not yet been established.
