Construction is moving quickly for the new Science & Engineering Innovation Center on the San Francisco State University Campus. The SEIC building will bring new facilities with state-of-the-art equipment for future students while housing the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and the School of Engineering. The building is expected to open by early 2024.

“The new SEIC building will provide students with the quality education and hands-on training necessary to meet the new and rapidly changing science and technology needs of the Bay Area and the nation,” said Dean of the College of Science & Engineering (CoSE) Carmen Domingo in a press release.
The California State University system has funded the roughly $150 million construction job. Separately, SFSU has raised funds privately to ensure students access leading-edge equipment and support services.

SmithGroup is the project architect. While the exterior is not particularly attractive, the firm has focused on ensuring the structure will have laboratories that can host state-of-the-art technology. The programming is intentionally flexible so that the school can adapt the reconfigure the center to reflect changing needs over the coming decades.
The development will yield around 179,000 square feet for the SEIC, with 125,000 square feet within the new structure and 54,000 square feet inside a renovated and repurposed building fronting 19th Avenue. The new center will serve around 7,000 CoSE students and hundreds of general education students every year.
The center will include engineering facilities on the first and third floors, chemistry facilities on the first and second floors, engineering applied project space, and a fluids and process control lab. Among the highlights for classrooms will be two maker spaces, a machine shop, three studio-style integrated lecture/lab classrooms for chemistry, two mass spectrometers, and facilities for protein crystallography. The CoSE dean’s offices will also be moving to the 5th floor.

The team aims to achieve LEED Gold certification with the latest energy and ventilation systems. DPR Construction is the general contractor.
Demolition work started in the summer of 2021, with construction starting this January. Completion of the new facilities is expected by January 2024, and renovation of the existing building will occur for roughly half a year starting in February 2024.
