Renovation work has been proposed for a public park located at 9600 Sunnyside Street in East Oakland. The project proposal includes the renovation and revamping of the Verdese Carter Park.

Trust for Public Land is listed as the project applicant.

The scope of work includes to renovate the public park to increase the usability, safety, and quality of the park. Renovation work proposes to revamp existing play areas to accommodate a wider age range, new nature play elements, outdoor fitness equipment, a walking loop, flexible gathering spaces, a stage with stepped seating, upgraded site furnishings, updated community garden space, increased shade on site, and improved safety elements including additional light fixtures. Additional community engagement is planned to keep residents and stakeholders involved and to ensure the concept design is still in line with community priorities.

The Verdese Carter Park is an important outdoor space for the community. The Verdese Carter Park is located in a diverse, densely populated neighborhood in East Oakland. The City of Oakland was awarded $18.2 million through the California State Parks’ Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program to increase access to the outdoors, contribute to a better quality of life, and improve physical, mental, and social health. The $18 million grants will fund three projects: Lincoln Square Park and Rec Center Renovation $8.5 million, Verdese Carter Park Renovation $8.4 million, Bridges Academy Green Schoolyard Park $1.3 million.

The proposed concept plan was developed through community engagement and helped secure California Prop 68 grant funding for the renovations. Once confirmed, the concept design will be updated and presented to PRAC before developing construction documents. Community engagement and concept plan update is scheduled for Summer 2024 with design development and construction documents being developed from Fall 2024 through Summer 2025, with the goal to have construction complete for the renovated park to open in Fall 2028.

has all the ground pollution been removed from the area of bancroft and 98th ave (across the street from e morris cox school). this was the site of a delco battery manufacturer when i was a student at the mentioned school in the 1950’s.

i recommend that interested parties make a foia request from the epa office in san francisco about this site. i worked for the epa in the ground water office and was familiar with all the information about this site.
