New permits were filed proposing the merger of several parcels and the construction of a new four-story apartment building located at 5139 MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland. The property is being called Mills Grove due to its close proximity to the historic Mills College at Northeastern Campus. The most recent permits appear to be a modification to previous permits filed at 5091 MacArthur Boulevard earlier this year.

If approved, the building would reach a total of four stories and include as many as 28 new residential units. All units would be two bedrooms, allowing for flexibility in family or student tenants. The total number of on-site parking spaces in the latest permits has been reduced from 28 to 26.

MBH Architects is responsible for the design. Previous renderings show a simple structural layout, without extensive façade ornamentation. Butterfly roof accents facing MacArthur Boulevard help break up the otherwise blocking building front. The exterior is to be clad in a combination of cement lap siding, concrete panels, and tiling to accent the southeast corner.

The vacant overgrown property spans just over 0.4 acres at the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Simmons Street in Oakland’s Maxwell Park neighborhood. Future residents would live across from Mills College at Northeastern University, in a space hovering between a more family-oriented community and the college campus.

  1. It would be great if SF Yimby could name the developer of these projects, not just the architect.

Still looks pretty imposing at four stories, built pretty much up to MacArthur Blvd.

  3. Rediculous! They need to make sure they build it correctly and not compromise the homes already built around it! 4 stories is way to high for the homes surrounding the lots! They want to open up Simmons St. which would be the wrong move for our community! The noise and traffic congestion would be augmented! Rediculous!
