Preliminary permits have been filed to potentially add housing at 3100 College Avenue in the Elmwood neighborhood of Berkeley. The initial filing is seeking feedback from city staff for the residential project with stacker parking. Sausalito-based architect Benjamin Jones is listed as the project applicant.

The pre-application is seeking feedback from city staff at the Land Use Planning Division regarding the addition of new housing in accordance with the City of Berkeley Planning Code. The filing states that construction would “install a new residential building that contains new residential units located within the new building shell…” adding that residential parking would be provided with basement stacked parking.

Further information about the overall residential capacity and how existing residents within the 1923-built apartment complex have not been provided. The project applicant has yet to reply to a request for confirmation regarding the project scope and design. The building has been in the news before, over a decade ago, when Frances Dinkelspiel reported for Berkeleyside about three of the 12 units being converted into short-term rentals available on Airbnb.

Two San Mateo-based individuals are jointly listed as the property owners. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be shared.

  1. “ install a new residential building that contains new residential units located within the new building shell…”

What’s with their opaque word salad? Does this mean demolish existing building? Hope it can be added to rather than replaced. Handsome classic building.

  2. If parking is to be added, I doubt it’s for student housing. The 51B stop is right next to the building.
