Meeting Tomorrow at 2442 Haste Street in Southside, Berkeley

The Berkeley Design Review Committee is scheduled to review plans tomorrow evening for an eight-story apartment complex at 2442 Haste Street in Southside, Berkeley. The student-oriented project is expected to deliver 38 apartments three blocks from the UC Berkeley campus. Studio KDA is responsible for the application and design.

The 85-foot-tall structure is expected to yield around 39,600 square feet. Apartment sizes will vary with two one-bedrooms, 13 three-bedrooms, 16 four-bedrooms, and seven five-bedrooms. Parking for four bicycles is included.

Studio KDA is the project architect, with Ripley Design overseeing landscape architecture. The latest illustrations show a scaled-back facade compared to the previous plans. The low-resolution renderings show the building clad with cream satin-finish terracotta tiles, bright yellow laminate siding, and faux-wood siding. The ground-floor space will be improved with green ceramic tiling.

The development plans to demolish the 1904-built Hutchinson Flats Building, which contains four apartments, one of which is deed-restricted for an extremely low-income household. The future building will include a replacement extremely low-income unit and two affordable units for very low-income households.

The 0.15-acre property is located along Haste Street between Telegraph Avenue and Dana Street. Future residents will be just a few blocks from the UC Berkeley campus, and half a block from the topped-out People’s Park development. The property owner is listed as a San Ramon-based individual filing through 2442 Haste Street LLC.

The Berkeley Design Review Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Thursday, January 15th, starting at 6:30 PM. The event will occur in the North Berkeley Senior Center, with attendance and participation available in-person and online via Zoom. For more information, visit the city website here.
