Construction has topped out for the 14-story UC Law San Francisco development at 198 McAllister Street in San Francisco’s Civic Center neighborhood. The project represents phase two of the Academic Village redevelopment of the city block. The project is a joint venture with the UCSF College of the Law San Francisco and Greystar. Once complete, it will provide dorms, classrooms, and a variety of facilities by the summer of 2023.

198 McAllister Street will span 356,000 square feet, including 667 bedrooms, approximately 50,000 square feet for academic functions, and 8,000 square feet for retail. Among the academic functions designed within 198 McAllister, there will be offices, classrooms, an auditorium, and trial and appellate courtrooms for the school.

Perkins&Will is the project architect. Facade installation has already started for the project, showcasing custom concave aluminum panels that contribute to the overall depth and texture to the structure. This dynamic exterior is further achieved by the carved-out seventh-floor deck, embracing a void between two massings.

UC Law SF is in the process of changing its name from UC Hastings Law. The college had been named after the former American politician since its foundation in 1878. However, new research about his direct involvement with the California genocide of indigenous people influenced the school’s Board of Directors vote to remove the name.

Phase three is scheduled for 2023 to 2025, renovating the 28-story mixed-use tower at 100 McAllister Street, also by Perkings&Will. Phase four, the final component, will create a new building at 201-247 Golden Gate Avenue, offering new facilities for UNITE HERE Local 2, including a union hall and offices above academic and residential facilities.
