The Berkeley Design Review Committee is scheduled to review plans tomorrow for the eight-story residential infill at 2037 Durant Avenue in Downtown Berkeley. The plan will bring dozens of homes to the city’s core thoroughfare. Studio KDA is the project’s architect and sponsor.

The proposed 90-foot tall structure will yield roughly 76,400 square feet, with 74 apartments and 1,550 square feet for ground-level retail. Parking will be required for 71 bicycles. Unit types will vary, with 25 one-bedrooms and 49 two-bedrooms. Four residences will be designated as affordable to very low-income households, allowing the developer to use a 20% density bonus.

The latest renderings for the project show nothing significant has changed about the architecture and the existing tree wall along the property line with the Periasn Center is shown as staying. The design of the rest of the structure has remained unchanged, with Juliet balconies and bay windows adding further decor to the facade. The exterior will be clad with stucco, horizontal siding, and bronze-tone guardrails.

Husteads Auto Body is the property owner and a family-owned auto shop with four other locations across the East Bay. Garden Architecture is the landscape architect, and Greenwood & Moore is the civil engineer.

The existing single-story auto repair shop will be demolished. The 0.3-acre property is located along Durant Avenue between Milvia Street and Shattuck Avenue, close to the Berkeley High School campus and a block from the UC Berkeley campus. The recently completed eight-story apartment complex at 2352 and 2370 Shattuck Avenue is just across the street. Future residents will be four blocks from the Downtown BART Station.

The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be shared.
