A new office project has been proposed for development at 811 Cedar Street in West Berkeley. The project proposal includes the construction of a new two-story building offering space for office use. Plans also call for the demolition of the existing structure on the site.
Trachtenberg Architects is responsible for the designs.
The scope of work includes the demolition of an existing single-family residence and a detached garage on the site, in order to construct a new two-story building offering space for office. The new building will also offer a parking garage built under the office space. A new eight-foot fence will also be installed as a part of the project.
A project application has been submitted, pending review and approval. The estimated construction timeline has not been revealed yet.

Since when do we need more office space? Especially at the expense of existing housing? I’m surprised that the neighborhood hasn’t killed this project.

No. The zoning change you are referring to only effects 11 acres at Gilman, Frontage Road, UPRR Tracks, and Page Street. That change is to go from heavy manufacturing to research and development. It is not near this site. This site is a mixed residential neighborhood.
It’s one single family home & it looks like additional space for the current business flanking both sides of the current house. Keep in mind, a city need a “balance” of tax revenue to maintain a strong budget. Change is hard but it’s the only constant in life.
