A new residential project has been proposed for development at 490 West MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland. The project proposal includes the conversion of an existing hotel into permanent supportive housing. The existing hotel, Imperial Inn, is a three-story structure.

Bay Area Community Services Housing Corp (BACS) and Memar Properties Inc (MPI Homes) will develop and manage the property.

The scope of work includes the conversion of an existing hotel room into a permanent supportive housing community. The existing hotel carries a capacity of 49 rooms. The project will also convert 8 units into fully accessible units, and reconfigure the existing laundry room to be accessible.

Planned work includes replacing the existing elevator, addressing various deferred maintenance items, remodeling the existing office/reception area into new offices for supportive services, property management, and counseling.

Outdoor improvements include a new bicycle parking storage shed, landscaping, an accessible entry ramp, benches, and the creation of usable open space for residents.

BACS will offer supportive, wrap-around services for people experiencing chronic homelessness. The project received $15.5 million in funding from both the City of Oakland and the state’s Home Key Program.

  1. I all on board for this kind of conversion. This is in my neighborhood, there are lots of homeless around, and they need HOUSING and support, not “sweeps” and jail. But also, this site has a large parking lot, and it would be kind of nice to see the whole thing redeveloped into something more dense. Or maybe combined with the Carl’s Junior parcel next door, to make something denser and bigger. Considering it’s one block from the BART station.
