Plans have recently surfaced for an affordable housing project at 611 El Camino Real next to the Santa Clara Caltrain Station. The pre-application requests a general plan amendment to allow the construction of a 70-unit development in the parking lot next to the Santa Clara Police Department building. The project applicant was not listed.
The recent planning project application is the first public reference to any development at 611 El Camino Real. Given its preliminary nature, the details provided are liable to change based on community feedback. The filing proposes to rezone the site from Light Industrial use to Medium Density Residential, allowing a density between 20-36 units per acre. The development aims to produce 70 units, including 69 units of affordable housing and one manager’s unit. Residential amenities are included alongside a courtyard and parking lot.
The property is located along El Camino Real, immediately next to the Caltrain Station, directly across from the recently opened six-story Benton Apartments complex, and close to the Santa Clara University campus. The City of Santa Clara is listed as the property owner. The city has yet to reply to a request for comment.
