Plans have been filed for a three-story athletics facility at 2835 Geary Boulevard between Laurel Heights and Lone Mountain in San Francisco. The project will replace the existing commercial structure with a variety of amenities for students of the Convent & Stuart Hall, a private Catholic school. As revealed late last year, the proposal does require the demolition of the nearly sixty-year-old pool hall, Family Billiards.
News of the planned closure of Family Billiards came out in a public meeting last December and was reported on by Max Harrison-Caldwell for the San Francisco Standard. According to his reporting, the school plans to start construction in less than two years. The pool hall owner, Delbert Wong, wasn’t sure he would search for a new location, saying, “it would take so much money to reopen another one.”

The proposal for 2835 Geary Boulevard is expected to reach 57 feet tall and contain around 65,000 square feet. The facility will provide space for a wide range of activities, including a swimming pool, gymnasium, rooftop turf field, weight training room, and a physical training space. Additional rooms will be available for several functions, such as yoga, dance, and nutrition.
So far, the proposal has entered the city’s planning department with a project review meeting request, meaning a project application has yet to be filed. The meeting request includes a question about rezoning the property to permit the height.
Schools of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic private school network founded in France with locations across the world, including Convent & Stuart Hall in San Francisco and the Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton.
The half-acre property is located along Geary Boulevard between Collins Street and Wood Street. The site is located along the busy thoroughfare close to the USF Lone Mountain College, formerly the Sacred Heart Academy and San Francisco College for Women.
The previous owner, 2835 Geary Building Partners, sold the property to Convent & Stuart Hall through Touchstone Commercial Partners for $13.5 million. The estimated cost for construction has yet to be shared.

gotta have somewhere to go for that post-workout recovery beer!
Sir, these are high school students.
Geary should have a six story height minimum.
You’re the best!
Terrible waste of a lot.
