A little over a week ago, the new affordable housing project called Kiku Crossing celebrated its Grand Opening. The project, located at 400 East 5th Avenue in San Mateo, was developed by MidPen as a transit-oriented apartment complex in the central area of San Mateo. The City of San Mateo and the County of San Mateo were close partners to help facilitate the project’s development.
BAR architects were responsible for the building designs, including layouts for the 225 affordable units located on site. Of these units, 100% are affordable, marked for residents making 30%-80% of the area’s median income. 25% of the units were also given preference for public employees, with an additional building preference for residents who live and work in the City of San Mateo. Units were also made available for people who have experienced homelessness or disability.
