Plans have been approved for the Bay Rise Park at 410 Airport Boulevard in Burlingame, San Mateo County. The proposal would fill a vacant lot with an educational facility and landscaping improvements. The project is a joint venture between The SPHERE Institute and the San Mateo Resource Conservation District.

The project site spans 9.4 acres of land, plus 0.8 acres along the Sanchez Channel. The planning set would extend the Bay Trail from Robert E Woolley State Park to a street crossing, connecting to the Bay Trail pathway along the Sanchez Channel. Site improvements will include an 8,560-square-foot educational facility, surface parking, two lawns, and an overlook grove. Waterfront amenities will include a kitesurfing ramp along the Bay and a kayak launch into Sanchez Creek. A sizable portion of the lot will be restored into a marsh.

HT Harvey & Associates is responsible for the landscape architecture, working with SERA Architects.

The SPHERE Institute is a not-for-profit policy research firm founded in 1996 and headquartered at 500 Airport Boulevard, directly across the street from the future park. In a letter shared with the city, the institute said it is pursuing the public space because “in an area surrounded by development and hotels, we believe the public can benefit greatly from the preservation of this land as habitat and open space for the public to enjoy.”

Public records show the lot is currently owned by the State of California, through the California State Lands Commission. Construction is anticipated to last around a year.
