Formal permits have been filed for a six-story apartment complex at 2727 Haste Street in Southside, Berkeley. The proposal is looking to replace an over-century-old group living housing with 45 apartments, including seven affordable units. The Austin Group is the project sponsor.

The 66-foot-tall structure is expected to yield around 34,530 square feet for housing. The complex will feature 44 three-bedroom apartments and a one-bedroom manager’s unit. The applicant invokes Senate Bill 330 and the State Density Bonus Law to streamline the approval process and increase residential capacity above base zoning. The developer has requested zoning waivers to remove bicycle parking requirements and reduce open space.

SDT Architects is responsible for the design. Illustrations show the building will blend modern farmhouse-style features with an urban infill. The exterior will be clad with white vertical composite board siding contrasted with black metal panels and grey wood-look siding.

The 0.17-acre lot is located along Haste Street between College Avenue and Piedmont Avenue. The site is a few blocks away from the UC Berkeley Campus. The property owner is listed as two Redwood City-based individuals. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have yet to be established.
