Significant construction is now underway at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Campus in Oakland. The award-winning pediatric institution has been undergoing a series of recent modernization projects aimed at expanding and improving care for the region. In 2022, SF YIMBY reported on the proposal of a new administrative support building on the site. Construction for that project is now underway, with completion expected later this year. Meanwhile, plans for a new main hospital building were approved in 2024, with preparatory construction beginning in the following months. Major construction on the hospital building is expected to start this year as well. UCSF BCH and UCSF self-sponsored the project’s application and approvals process.

The soon-to-be-completed Administrative Support Building will consist of a three-story office building at 747 52nd Street. The 39-foot-tall structure will yield 31,300 square feet of supportive offices for the health campus. The project’s position will allow it to provide nearby administrative support to both patient and outpatient buildings and services.

The new hospital facility will rise seven-stories above grade, bringing it two stories higher than the existing hospital facility. Floors one through five will be synchronized in height with the established building, allowing for easy connection between the newer and older areas.

New patient services added with the additional facilities will include 104 additional patient beds, a new neonatal intensive care unit, a new surgery suite, a larger emergency department, a new floor dedicated to behavioral health services, and additional gathering and supportive areas for patients and families. All parts of the hospital will feature updated equipment and technology.

The project’s location is on the existing UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital campus in the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland. The primary project area will fall in a triangular lot bounded by Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Highway 24, and 52nd Street. The area is easily accessed by vehicle from the freeway and several major thoroughfares. The southern portion of the campus will also include a new multi-story parking garage on site to help support the transportation needs of patients and families.

The project’s timeline is currently projected for final completion in 2031.
