New affordable housing has officially opened at 1178 Sonora Court in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County. The seven-story apartment complex, dubbed Ira D. Hall Square, will add nearly two hundred apartments across from the Lawrence Caltrain Station. MidPen Housing is the project sponsor.
The roughly 75-foot-tall structure has added 176 apartments to the neighborhood, of which 174 dwellings will be for households earning between 30% and 70% of the area’s median income, and two units will be for on-site property managers. Additionally, 45 of the affordable units will be designated for homeless individuals referred from the County of Santa Clara Coordinated Entry system. Dwelling sizes will vary from studios to three bedrooms, and parking will be included for 134 vehicles.

Studio T Square is the project’s architect, and Cahill Contractors is the general contractor responsible for the construction.
Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein emphasized the developer’s collaboration with the city, saying, “through our strong partnership, MidPen has now created 12 affordable housing developments and over 1,000 affordable units here in Sunnyvale. The Ira D. Hall Square project is another outstanding example of that partnership in action. And it is a testament to how we can work together to achieve our community’s vision for more affordable housing.”
Matthew O. Franklin, President and CEO of MidPen Housing, shared, “we couldn’t think of a more fitting tribute to the life and legacy of our founding CEO Ira D. Hall, who was committed to making meaningful, lasting change for individuals and families with low incomes.”
