A new medical facility has been opened for the University of California, San Francisco, at 490 Illinois Street, Mission Bay, San Francisco. The development expands upon an already-expansive campus of medical facilities run by the city university. The structure will contain the UCSF’s Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision, dedicated exclusively to research, teaching, and patient care services relating to eye care.

SmithGroup is responsible for the design. The architecture firm is one of the oldest operating in the country, having been founded in 1853, and with projects in their portfolio like the first manufacturing plant for Ford Motors. Regarding their approach to the design of medical facilities, the firm writes, “health represents the largest practice within SmithGroup, one of the world’s preeminent integrated architecture, engineering, and planning firms… From its first healthcare project in 1928, the firm’s award-winning Health practice has advanced the art and science of healthcare architecture.”
“What most excites us is the opportunity to bring so much talent within the UCSF community and so many resources together to address the most challenging issues of eye health and visual disability,” Stephen McLeod MD said. “We believe that this really will allow UCSF to lead the way in the discovery of exciting new therapies.”
Jeffrey Farber, Koret Foundation CEO, a significant supporter of the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology, commented that, “Koret looks for leading institutions to help elevate the quality of life in the Bay Area, especially for the most vulnerable among us.”

The newly opened development spans 347,500 square feet across three separate buildings. The main tower will rise twelve stories, flanked by a five-story south wing and garden-topped three-story north wing. Parking for over two hundred vehicles will be included on-site across 75,000 square feet.
Construction cost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, estimated at $237 million, equivalent to the Powerball jackpot from January 2020. Non-profit That Man May See provided fundraising for the construction.
The facilities are along 3rd Street, immediately across from the UCSF Medical Center and newly-opened Chase Center stadium, home for the Golden State Warriors.
