Construction has started for the new two-story townhome complex at 600 Hartz Avenue in Danville, Contra Costa County. The plan has replaced the FAZ restaurant with 37 new homes and ground-level retail. The Address Company is the project’s developer.

Images provided by a YIMBY reader show that demolition work and removal of trees have already been accomplished and that excavation work is starting. The two-story complex will create around 82,650 square feet, with 46,680 square feet for housing, 3,920 square feet for two retail spaces, and 31,360 square feet for the subterranean garage. Of the 37 townhomes, units will vary between 615 to 1,645 square feet, each between eight one-bedrooms and 29 two-bedrooms. There will be five apartments to be priced below market rate. Parking will be included for 78 cars. Bicycle parking is not specified. CBG is consulting on civil engineering.

William Hezmalhalch Architects is responsible for the design. The collage-style infill is clad with various facade materials that evoke the region’s agricultural history, historic brick buildings, and suburban sprawl. Facade materials will include horizontal lap siding, board siding, shingle, cement plaster, brick veneer, stone veneer, precast concrete, and painted wood. Trellises will be installed for the balconies for attractive shading.

MJS is responsible for landscape architecture. The site map shows improvements along the Hartz Avenue sidewalk with seating and a narrow public pathway connecting to the rear of the lot. The structures will line the edges of the irregularly shaped lot, around the amenity courtyard, accessible for residents from the open-air lobby. The site includes an outdoor dining space, a dog relief area, and a fireplace lounge.

The 1.19-acre parcel is located on the southern edge of Danville’s retail thoroughfare, close to the Village Theater, the public library, and a grocery store. The Address Company won approval from the city in 2022. However, when YIMBY first broke the news in 2021 of their 37-townhouse complex to replace the FAZ restaurant in Danville, a representative for the developer denied involvement. The firm has yet to reply to a request for further understanding.

    You can thank our governor and democratic legislators for all this forced building in CA. Every single city has to add an unrealistic amount housing, regardless of school and road overcrowding. If they don’t they are fined and lose their school and state funding. It’s blackmail. They call it a “Housing crisis” but it’s not, it’s property tax creator so they can support all the illegals coming in. Vote them all out! They’re crooks.
