Revised plans have been shared for a new apartment complex at 1001 Oak Hill Road in Lafayette, Contra Costa County. The proposal aims to create 53 apartments and more parking in the city’s retail core. In a public meeting earlier this week, the city’s Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the City Council approve the development.

The six-story building will contain 47,040 square feet of housing, 18,600 square feet of parking, and roughly 6,000 square feet of retail. There will be 53 rental units, with 26 one-bedrooms and 27 two-bedrooms. Parking will be included for 87 cars as per city requirements, including 59 spaces for residents, 11 for guests, and 17 for retail customers.
HDO Architects is responsible for the design, with Environmental Foresight working on landscape architecture. While the complex is technically six stories tall, a series of setbacks that conform to a sloped property means it never looks more than four floors high. The L-shaped structure will be clad with brick, stucco, and smooth concrete. Humann Company will be the civil engineer.

Jeff Stone, a local developer and owner of Diamond Construction, is listed as the property owner operating through SAJ Development. With the project moving to the city council and no outright opposition voiced during the planning commission’s meeting, Stone is very close to securing entitlements for the proposal. The estimated timeline for construction has yet to be established.

Why do all the developments in Lafayette have such low ceilings?? It looks so odd and cheap.
This looks like a great infill project in downtown Lafayette. You can walk to everything from there, so it will boost existing retail. It is so close to BART and shopping you would not get in your car except to go on the freeway, which is adjacent. I think the City has done a great job keeping downtown fresh.
Even if housing density has to be increased, developers should do so in a manner that is respectful of the character of the community in which construction occurs. This plan by Jeff Stone and Diamond Construction shows no respect at all for Lafayette. Lafayette residents have repeatedly and overwhelmingly responded to surveys by indicating their principal priority is to maintain the small town character and semi-rural ambience of Lafayette to the maximum extent possible, but Stone’s design has nothing whatsoever to do with that character – it is blockish, unimaginative, urban and ugly.

Typical Developer. Not interested in the community, but rather in building a structure that will make him money. Good luck with interest rates, building costs, permitting, and traffic
concerns. Low cost housing advocates!!! Market pricing will do nothing but add population, drive our local businesses out where the project will be constructed, and bring on more crime because our population will be more confined. Come on Man. This is a joke and our City Staff should all be fired for not representing us, but idealistically carrying opn as if they really care about our community.
