As per a press release shared with SFYIMBY.com, last week Milpitas celebrated the inauguration of Phase II of the Milpitas Unified School District’s (MUSD) Innovation Campus. The project proposal includes the development of a new education and workforce development center.

Blach Construction is the project developer. Quattrocchi Kwok Architects is responsible for the designs.

MUSD Innovation Campus will now support future-ready learners by offering a variety of educational and training opportunities that transition into sustainable careers. The scope of work includes the development of a new education and workforce center that supports students from early childhood through adulthood.

Construction in Phase II brought facilities for Calaveras Hills High School. Two new L-shaped classroom buildings surrounding a central courtyard were designed. This creates space for flexible classrooms and modernized Career Technical Education (CTE) labs that will operate on what the project team is calling “Folia prefabrication solution.” Also, Phase II will add a recording studio, an e-sports lab, a flexible space for independent study programs, three science labs and an art studio.

“This state-of-the-art expansion supports MUSD’s mission to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for sustainable careers while meeting the community’s long-term educational needs,” states the press release.

From Phase I, the initial buildings offer space for the MUSD District Office, the MUSD Adult School, and the Milpitas High School Extension at the MUSD Innovation Campus– all have been fully operational since August 2023.

Together, all seven buildings feature a variety of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) classrooms and labs, career development spaces, administrative offices and conference rooms, independent study spaces and multiple indoor and outdoor collaboration areas.

The press release informs about the construction material used. The structures are erected using Folia, a flexible, durable, prefabricated classroom building solution exclusive only to Blach, QKA and GPLA Structural Engineers and Builders. Folia also supports the project’s sustainability goals, which include Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) certification and renewable power supplied by MUSD’s existing photovoltaic system. Each building includes sustainable materials, energy efficient lighting, all-electric mechanical systems, stormwater catchment and water-efficient landscaping.

Funding for the first two phases of the $90 million, nearly 100,000-sq.ft. MUSD Innovation Campus was made possible by the 2018 Bond Measure AA and California state-matching grants. With Phases One and Two now complete, MUSD is planning to add a third and final phase, which will include a Workforce Development Center and Early Childhood Education Research Center, achieving the vision for the campus to support Milpitas learners from early childhood through adulthood.
