Last week, the San Jose Planning Commission approved the proposal for another data center located at 1657 Alviso Way in the Alviso neighborhood of Northern San Jose. The plan originally brought by the Microsoft Corporation in 2019 was previously stalled but has now been processed alongside a 2022 request for parking exemptions.

The site comprises two parcels spanning 64.59 gross acres of land, along highway 237 and immediately adjacent to the Los Estoros Energy Center. The new data center’s construction will require the removal of 79 trees, to be replaced with 273 newly planted trees. Additionally, it will include demolition and relocation of an existing 1,440-square-foot Valley Water Purification Visitors Center.

The project will consist of two single-story data center buildings with ancillary office use, a new 115-kilovolt electrical substation, and a reconstructed visitor center, totalling 397,205 square feet. The data center will be broken into two buildings of 244,000 square feet and 152,000 square feet, both including approximately 13,500 square feet for office usage, the remainder allocated for the data facilities. Building plans will include 224 natural gas emergency generators to power the facilities in the event of utility failure. Combined, the buildings will have a maximum electrical load of 99 MW.

Also to be constructed are a 54,000 square foot water storage tank, a new sewage lift pump, a new parking plaza, and access driveways. The new facility will provide a total of 122 parking spaces and 34 bicycle parking spaces for employee usage.

The new development is one of a recent trend in data center construction for the South Bay. SF Yimby reported last week on another center proposed at 4701 N First Street.
