The existing site location of the Jewish Family and Children’s Services building at 2245 Post Street and its neighboring parcel at 2255 Post Street have received a Notice of Determination, allowing them to proceed to the next phase of development for a new Holocaust Center in San Francisco. The JFCS is self-sponsoring the project, which is to become a combined office space and community building dedicated to the education and awareness of issues surrounding antisemitism, racism, and genocide, both past and present.

Plans for the structure describe a four-story building, rising to a maximum height of approximately 68 feet. Including a single below-grade level, the total building would comprise 34,000 square feet, marking a significant increase from the current facilities.

The space is expected to contain rooms for public exhibitions, a lecture hall, a library, offices, large and small-group educational and conference spaces, as well as the JFCS Holocaust Center’s archives.

Karin Payson Architecture + Design is responsible for the building’s design. The most recent illustrations for the project show a porcelain tile facade overlooking Post Street, with articulated metal elements. Interior spaces will emphasize pale wood paneling, creating a light and modern space.

The site is located in a centrally accessible area, only one block away from the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Divisadero Street. The development plans do not include any new parking for the site, but patrons of the center will have easy access to nearby transit. The general surrounding neighborhood is a culturally rich part of the city, with a long history of religious and ethnic diversity. This new development hopes to continue that legacy.
