Progress has been made on the foundation of a seven-story affordable housing complex at 2016 Ashby Avenue in South Berkeley, Alameda County. The project is adding 50 apartments to the backyard of the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church. Nibbi Brothers General Contractors is responsible for construction, and Community Housing Development Corporation is the developer.

The seven-story apartment complex is expected to produce around 55,380 square feet of housing. Of the 50 units, one will be for the on-site property manager, 29 will be deed-restricted for households earning between 20%-60% of the area’s median income, and 20 will be for households earning less than 30% AMI. Within the latter affordability range, 13 will be set aside for homeless seniors who may also be experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Lowney Architecture is responsible for the design. Renderings show a typical residential infill with vertical articulation and an exterior color palette that complements the retained church structure. Facade materials will include brick veneer, stucco, and red wooden soffits.

The site is located across from the Ashby BART Station, the recently completed 2001 Ashby Avenue affordable housing project by RCD Housing, and a couple of blocks from the city’s famed Berkeley Bowl grocery store.

The estimated cost and timeline for construction have not yet been shared.
