A new apartment complex has reached its successful completion at 1150 3rd Street in Mission Bay. The affordable housing complex is given its name in honor of the late former mayor, Edwin M. Lee, and will offer housing to unhoused veterans and low-income families. OCII, Chinatown Community Development Center, and Swords to Plowshares, a veteran-focused nonprofit worked together to develop the property. Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, Saida + Sullivan Design Partners are the architects responsible for design and construction.
Edwin M. Lee Apartments has 118 residential units and has residents living since February. San Francisco Mayor London Breed celebrated its grand opening that was postponed due to the pandemic. The property is the fourth 100% affordable development in the Mission Bay South Redevelopment Project Area.
The complex offers square footage of 123,700 square feet. The building facade rises to a height of five levels and features 62 units designated for formerly unhoused veterans. 56 units are proposed for families. The residences are offered as a mix of studios, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. On-site amenities are inclusive of communal spaces, walking arenas, and outdoor seating areas.
The project secured funding of $78 million at the federal, state, and city levels. $20.1 million was secured from the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII) and $10 million from the state’s Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Program along with rental subsidies from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. $4.5 million was generated through private donations.
