Formal permits have been filed for a five-story affordable housing complex at 4655 Steele Street in Redwood Heights, Oakland. The project will replace a closed facility owned by the Oakland Unified School District and next to a Montessori charter school.

The application comes a little over half a year after the preliminary application was filed to the city, allowing the project to benefit from Senate Bill 330’s streamlined approval process. The developer hopes to create a five-story structure with 56 apartments, with one manager’s unit and the rest designated as affordable to workforce households.

The property is located along Steel Street, abutting the Urban Montessori Charter School, and near the I-580 freeway. Across the freeway is the Mills College at Northeastern University campus, the historic 171-year-old Mills College campus that, after several years of financial trouble, merged with Northeastern University in 2022.

SUPERConstructors, Inc., an Oakland-based contractor, is listed as responsible for the application. The estimated cost and timeline for construction have not been established.
