A new multifamily affordable housing project has broken ground on Treasure Island, San Francisco. This one project, known as the Maceo May Apartments, will add just over a hundred new residential units, of which 65 are for veterans. The six-story structure is a modular construction, yielding 104,000 square feet across the 0.74-acre parcel. The building will be a mix of studios, one-bedrooms, and two bedrooms. The Chinatown Community Development Center and Swords of Plowshare, a Bay Area developer, will be developing the project jointly.

Mithun is the architect of the project. The building will feature a sleek and modern exterior. The majority of the structure will be white, with bronze accents framing windows and forming a wide column near the structure’s edge. The building’s bottom will have large floor to ceiling windows, creating for a mezzanine level with an abundance of natural light.

Treasure Island is currently undergoing a massive redevelopment, transforming the former military-dominated reclaimed land into a residential neighborhood. Financed and managed by the Treasure Island Development Authority, City Hall hopes to add a total of 8,000 new homes, as well as 300 hotel rooms and 290 acres of public space. 550,000 square feet of retail are planned, imagining a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood.

Completion is expected by 2022. It will be one of twenty buildings on the island deemed to be 100% affordable.
