National Park Service, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and The Presidio Trust have teamed up to develop a fourteen-acre recreational parkland atop highway tunnels offering stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay, Presidio, and the San Francisco skyline. The green space is a chance for transforming highway infrastructure into a vibrant new public space for Bay Area residents.
James Corner Field Operations is the architecture-design team involved in the project.
The park will showcase scenic overlooks, gardens, pathways, a community plaza with food and amenities along with a campfire circle, and picnic spots. The recreational area will also be expanded to feature a youth education center with new labs and community space. The landscaped property will also feature an interactive play area where kids will have opportunities to explore nature.
The development will be served by free and well-connected public transit. Named Presidio Tunnel Tops, it will also connect the parklands formerly dissected by infrastructure. Tunnel Tops will connect the Presidio’s Main Post and Crissy Field for a relaxing experience and stunning views.
The under-construction infrastructure will be seen taking its beautiful form in Spring 2022. A soft opening is anticipated in Fall 2021 which will be used to test the services and amenities including transit, ticketing, and landscaped areas.
