New renderings have been revealed for a project at 940 Battery Street in North Beach, San Francisco. The project proposal includes the addition of two new floor levels to the existing building. The project requests interior and exterior alterations to support the change of use from a commercial/industrial space to a museum.
Fort Mason Center is the property owner. Mark Cavagnero Associates Architects is managing the design concepts and construction.
Constructed in 1917, the existing structure is a three-story building with a basement, currently used as a warehouse. The proposed design has been reviewed and approved by the Planning Department Historic Preservation Commission.
The site is a parcel spanning an area of 7,242 square feet. The total built-up area measures 30,227 square feet. Proposed uses include new museum exhibition spaces on the basement, ground, and second floors. New office space on the third, fourth, and fifth floors is also proposed. Additionally, two new egress stairs, one new elevator, new plumbing and electric, and fire protection systems are also included.
Structural work includes reinforcing the existing concrete perimeter walls and maintaining the wood framing up the second floor. New steel framing and composite steel and concrete floors are proposed for the new third, fourth, fifth, and roof levels. Twenty bike parking spaces are also allotted on the site.
The building elevation will rise to a height of 65 feet. The estimated date of project completion has not been revealed yet.
The property site is located in the North Waterfront district which has a history in the city going back as early as the days of the Gold Rush.
