One Post Street is tied as the 26th tallest building in the Bay Area, planned or built. The office tower stands 529 feet above street level in the San Francisco Financial District. The tower had been home to the McKesson Corporation Global Headquarters before the firm moved to Texas in 2019. Brookfield Properties is the building owner, with leasing managed by JLL.
Today’s story is part of a weekly series on SFYIMBY to count down the 52 tallest towers in the Bay Area built or planned as of January 2021. One Post Street is tied with 525 Market Street with a rooftop height of 529 feet.
Built in 1969, the 37-story building yields 424,000 square feet, with 406,500 square feet of rentable office space and 17,500 square feet of retail. Each tower floor plate offers approximately 12,000 square feet. Office employees get access to the on-site fitness center and outdoor plaza.
At the time of completion, One Post, once named the Crocker Building and Aetna Building, it was the third tallest structure in the skyline, surpassed only by its neighbor, 44 Montgomery Street, and the iconic 555 California Street.
Welton Becket & Associates is the architect. The modernist tower has an imposing presence emphasized by the dark granite strokes rising out of the ground and into the sky. Translucent dark windows and lintels are lightly setback to further highlight the verticality. The design is an aesthetic juxtaposition to the firm’s work on One California Street and 50 California Street.
SWA Group is responsible for the site’s landscape architecture. The firm helped design the outdoor courtyard and two-tiered tree-lined entrance into the Montgomery Street BART Station. Universal Land Company and Crocker Land Company were the original project developers. Dinwiddie Construction was the main contractor.
The tower had been owned by McKesson Corporation. The pharmaceutical company operated its global headquarters from One Post up until April of 2019. McKesson Corporation since moved the HQ to Irving, Texas. The firm was founded in New York City in 1833. According to Business Journal, McKesson sold One Post to Brookfield in March of 2017 for $245 million, and later renovated in 2020 to receive LEED Platinum certification.
