The 17th tallest building in San Francisco planned or built is Market Center, the 573-foot tall office tower at 575 Market Street in SoMa, San Francisco. Part of a two-structure complex, the towering offices were home to the international headquarters for Standard Oil of California, now known as Chevron, from opening until 2001. Now, the building is owned and managed by Paramount Group.
Today’s story is part of a weekly series on SFYIMBY to count down the 52 tallest towers in the Bay Area built or planned as of January 2021.
Market Center, i.e., the Chevron Towers, is a two-tower complex surrounded by a landscaped plaza. 575 Market Street, completed in 1975, stands 40 stories from the 17,930 square foot parcel to produce just over half a million square feet of floor space. Combined with 555 Market Street, the 22-story companion building opened in 1964, Market Center yields 752,000 square feet. The building is LEED Gold certified.
San Francisco-based Hertzka And Knowles are responsible for the architecture, and Theodore Osmundson for the landscape architecture. The building is characterized by a repetitive window scheme lightly raised from an otherwise flat granite facade.
Paramount Group purchased Market Center from Blackstone in 2019 for a whopping $722 million, averaging out to $959 per square foot. Paramount is a real estate investment trust company, or REIT, based in New York City. The firm has stakes in Spear Tower, One Front Street, and the nearly-complete One Steuart Lane.
