For the first time in 25 years, San Francisco State University has opened a new academic building. The project includes the construction of the George and Judy Marcus Hall for the Liberal and Creative Arts Building, which is home to SFSU’s Broadcast and Electronic Communications Arts (BECA) program.
McCarthy Building Companies is the general contractor. Mark Cavagnero Associates is responsible for the design concepts. SWA Group is managing the landscape architecture. Other project participants include Forell|Elsesser Structural Engineers, CSW civil engineering, and WSP for mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP).

The project brings a four-story structure spanning an area of 75,000 square feet. SFSU’s new Liberal and Creative Arts building promotes a flexible learning and production environment for teaching electronic media that can be adapted to changing technologies, preparing the next generations to lead an ever-evolving media landscape.
Plans showcase two multi-story television studios, a newsroom, radio station, video post-production space, audio recording, production, and post-production areas. The upper three floors predominantly include offices and classroom space.

Despite multiple hurdles like COVID-19 and wildfires across California, McCarthy Building Companies was able to successfully execute this stellar project within budget and just in time for incoming students. McCarthy began construction in 2018 and concluded in the Spring of 2021.
