Permits have been filed seeking the approval of operating a hotel as a semi-congregational shelter. The property, Ansonia Hotel, is located at 711 Post Street in Lower Nob Hill, San Francisco.

Core Hotels, LLC is the property owner. San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing is the project applicant.

The Ansonia Hotel is a former youth hostel. It is a five-floor facility, spanning an area of 18,159 square feet, with 123 units (70 residential units and 53 tourist rooms). The units are a mix of singles, doubles, triples, and quads which equate to an overall capacity of 318 beds. 48 units have private baths. All floors have shared bathrooms/a showers. There is a lobby/front desk, basement, community area, commercial kitchen, dining space, and laundry facility. An elevator operates at all floors.

The SF Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) is requesting City approval to utilize the hotel as a semi-congregate shelter. Type of construction is concrete, slab-on-grade with concrete perimeter walls and interior footings under a load-bearing structure. The facade is brick masonry. The superstructure is conventional wood-framing with steel columns at the sub-basement. The roof is a flat, built-up granular surface.

The project is under review and an estimated project timeline has not been announced yet.

  1. In around 1973 (22 years old) I moved to SF and my first resident was 711 Post Street Ansonia resident club, which served breakfast and dinner five days a week? In order to reduced my rent I helped with serving breakfast and dinner. My room consisted of single bed with a sink, the full toilet and bathroom was down the hall. This building served the as a great place for young people moving to SF and recommended that the building with exception of upgrades like life safety remain as is. I have nothing but good memories of the place and met many wonderful people.
