The designation of Clay Theater might soon undergo a change. The 111-year-old film theater, located at 2261 Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights, San Francisco, could be revived and given the status of a historic landmark.
Clay Theater, constructed in 1913 as a nickelodeon movie theater, also known as the Regent, Avalon, The Clay International, and The Clay, is historically significant as one of the oldest single-screen nickelodeon movie houses in San Francisco.
It is also renowned for its association with the pioneering period of moving picture theaters and the development of the film industry in San Francisco during the early 20th century.
The Clay Theater was initiated for designation by the Board of Supervisors on July 27, 2021. The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will consider the recommendation of the landmark designation to the BOS. If recommended by the HPC, the designation will be considered for adoption by the Board of Supervisors at a future public hearing.
