The Sustainable Communities Environmental Assessment has been filed for 1100 El Camino Real, starting the public review period by the City of Millbrae, in San Mateo County. The mixed-use project aims to create 384 new homes and a new hotel a little over a mile away from BART, Caltrain, and SFO. Anton DevCo is the project developer.
The development will start with the five-story apartment building and extend to the future hotel. Plans for the hotel are preliminary at this stage, with the developer expecting to build between 175 and 200 guest rooms, a 3,000 square foot meeting room and event space, as well as a 1,500 square foot dining/bar area. Parking is expected for 187 cars in a 69,530 square foot garage.
Plans are more concrete for the apartment complex. The 63-foot tall structure will yield 600,690- square feet, with 312,970 square feet for residential use, 203,510 square feet for the 560-car six-story garage, and 44,230 square feet for open space amenities. Additional storage will be included for 72 bicycles. The building will consist of 384 units, of which 19 will be for very low-income residents.
KTGY Group is the project architect, working with Newport Beach-based MJS Landscape Architecture and BKF Engineers. The design incorporates several elements of historicized ornamentation and facade materials, an homage to the existing El Rancho Inn as well as the Peninsula’s brutal Spanish Colonial past. The decorative flair includes patterned tiles, white stucco in reference to the Spanish missions, and installing a fountain plaza, a Mission-style arch.
Residents will find quick access to Sam Trans buses and various cyclist routes. The Millbrae train station and SFO will both be just over a mile away.
Crews will start with the demolition of the existing 220-room El Rancho Inn and eight units between 33 and 35 Center Street. The five-story apartment complex will span 5.5 acres. Future development is then tentatively planned on the remaining 1.2-acre site for the seven-story hotel.
Work on-site is expected to begin in 2023, with construction starting in 2024 and full buildout by 2026, assuming development proceeds smoothly.
