Groundbreaking has occurred for Sunnyvale Block 15, an eight-structure affordable housing project in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County. Construction will bring 90 new dwelling units in townhomes and an apartment building at 365 South Mathilda Avenue. Related Companies is the project developer.

The project will yield 124,830 square feet from the 1.44-acre site, with 115,530 square feet for the 48-foot tall apartment component and 9,300 square feet for the 21-foot tall townhomes. Unit sizes will vary, with 12 studios, 32 one-bedrooms, 23 two-bedrooms, 16 three-bedrooms, and seven three-bedroom townhome units.

The affordable housing will range from 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income, or AMI, with 23 apartments for 30% AMI. Housing will be prioritized for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Housing Choices Coalition will be providing assistant services for such residents.

The resident amenities will include a community room with a kitchen, a computer room, an outdoor courtyard, and underground parking for 93 vehicles.

Steinberg Hart is the project architect. Facade materials will include cement fiberboard siding, paint, cement masonry, dark bronze panels, and asphalt shingles. As the firm describes, the overall programming and planning are “combining public-facing amenity and open spaces, street-facing townhomes, and porous visual connections into the residential courtyards.”
