The preliminary project application has been filed for a new four-story non-profit center at 2245 Post Street in San Francisco’s Lower Pacific Heights. The project would create a new home for the JFCS Holocaust Center, an educational facility run by the Jewish Family and Children’s Services.

The 52-foot tall structure will yield around 16,080 square feet with 870 square feet for useable open space and parking for four bicycles. The ground floor will include an exhibition space illuminated by a lightwell, and an archives room for displaying documents space. Above that, the second floor will open up to a library reading room, open space, and two outdoor decks. The third and fourth floors will include office space, two conference rooms, and the board room.

The new facilities are being designed for the JFCS Holocaust Center, with the mission to “promote education and greater awareness of patterns of genocide and the Holocaust.” The space will host programs for many middle and high school students to learn and recognize the Holocaust and antisemitism.

Karin Payson Architecture + Design will be responsible for the design. In response to YIMBY, Karin Payson shared that “we propose to demolish the existing one on the site, which houses the Tauber Holocaust Library, a formidable archive, and offices, and replace it with a new 4-story state-of-the-art center for exhibitions, conferences, and other public events related to its mission, as well as to house the Holocaust Center’s expansive library and archive.”

The 0.1-acre property is on a block bound by Divisadero Street and Scott Street, around 15 to 20 minutes away from Powell Street BART Station. The project applicant estimates construction will cost around $12 million. A timeline for construction and completion has not yet been established.
