Building permits have been filed for an affordable housing infill at 2016 Ashby Avenue in South Berkeley, Alameda County. The plan is set to be built on the site of the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, replacing half of the site with a six-story residential infill. Community Housing Development Corporation is responsible for the application.

Lowney Architecture’s new renderings show a seven-story residential infill with balanced vertical articulation that complements the retained church structure. Facade materials will include brick veneer, stucco, and red wooden soffits. The project will create 50 units.

The new rendering shows an evolution in design compared to the plan sets drafted by the same firm in 2021. Then, the plan was to build a six-story infill with 48 affordable units clad with brick veneer and white cement plaster. Parking was included for 19 cars and at least 60 bicycles.

The site is located across from the Ashby BART Station and a couple blocks from the city’s famed Berkeley Bowl grocery store. Across the street, RCD Housing is overseeing the completion of 2001 Ashby Avenue, a six-story affordable housing complex with 86 apartments. Alameda County started accepting applications to enter the unit lottery in late January of this year.
